Choosing the Right Paper Stock: Coated vs Uncoated vs Recycled
Choosing paper should not feel like a guessing game. But, with so many options, it sometimes does for our customers. Coated, uncoated, recycled... They all sound straightforward until you are staring at the print brief and wondering which one does the job.
When it comes down to it, the paper choice is not just aesthetics, but it also affects cost, performance, sustainability and end-use. Whether you are ordering office print, marketing materials or operational documents, selecting the right stock from the outset saves time and avoids reprints later.
Here at Clyde Paper & Print, we have been helping our customers make the best choices for their print for over 40 years. So, to continue that – we have pulled together a helpful guide on the different types of paper we stock to help you make the right choice.
COATED PAPER

Coated paper has a surface treatment that improves ink holdout and image clarity. It is available in gloss, silk and matt finishes.
Typically used for:
- Brochures and catalogues
- Promotional flyers
- Covers and high-image content
Key benefits:
- Strong colour definition
- Consistent print results
- Professional finish
Considerations:
Due to the coated surface are of this paper, it is not ideal for handwriting or forms. Coated stocks can also increase cost depending on finish and weight.
UNCOATED PAPER

Uncoated paper has no surface seal, allowing ink to absorb directly into the sheet.
Typically used for:
- Letterheads and stationery
- Forms and internal documents
- Books, manuals and reports
Key benefits:
- Easy to write on
- Reliable for everyday use
- Generally cost-effective
Considerations:
Colours appear softer than on uncoated paper, which may not suit image-led print.
Our Uncoated Paper range includes: Inaset, Pro Design, REY Text & Graphics, Kaskad and more.
RECYCLED PAPER

Recycled paper is manufactured using recovered fibres and is available in both coated and uncoated options.
Typically used for:
- Sustainability-led organisations
- Reports, leaflets and packaging
- Corporate communications
Key benefits:
- Reduced environmental impact
- High-quality options now widely available
- Supports sustainability targets and policies
Considerations:
Some recycled stocks have slightly different shades and textures, so specifying samples is recommended. You can request a sample from us by contacting:
Our Recycled Paper range includes Mycopy, Envirocopy, Paperline, Ecocopy and more. Contact us for more information on these brands.
MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE
For print, the best paper stock depends on:
- Function – how the print will be used
- Print method – digital or litho
- Budget and volumes
- Sustainability requirements
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to print, but the right advice early on can make a significant difference.
