Introducing Lockable Phone Pouches for Schools

As a trusted education supplier, Clyde Paper & Print has supported schools across the UK with paper, print and education supplies for decades. Now, we're expanding our range with a new solution designed to tackle one of the biggest challenges facing today's classrooms: mobile phone use in schools.

Introducing Clyde Lockable Phone Pouches – a simple, secure and practical way for schools to create a more focused, phone-free learning environment.

A practical solution for phone-free schools

The principle is simple. At the beginning of the school day, pupils place their mobile phone inside their own lockable phone pouch. The pouch securely locks using a magnetic mechanism and stays with the pupil throughout the day – in their bag or pocket – meaning the school doesn't need to collect or store hundreds of valuable devices.

At home time, pupils simply tap the pouch against a designated magnetic unlocking point to access their phone again.

For schools, it provides a clear and consistent way to manage mobile phone use without teachers having to repeatedly enforce "out of sight" rules or take responsibility for pupils' devices.

Designed for everyday school use

Our school phone pouches are made from durable, waterproof neoprene and designed to withstand everyday handling in a busy school environment. They are available in three sizes, accommodating most modern smartphones up to 7.2 inches, with options available for larger devices.

Schools can choose from:

  • Plain navy or black lockable pouches, held in UK stock
  • Custom printed phone pouches featuring your school crest or branding
  • House or year-group colour coding
  • Numbered or barcoded pouches for easier asset management
  • Optional signal-blocking pouches
  • Velcro-closing alternatives for pupils with medical requirements or agreed reasonable adjustments

Printed pouches are produced in-house by Clyde, with a free digital proof supplied before production – bringing together our new phone pouch range with the print expertise schools already know us for.

Why are schools going phone-free?

The move towards phone-free schools is being backed by both government guidance and a growing body of international research.

From September 2026, Department for Education statutory guidance states that schools in England should be mobile-phone-free by default, while updated Scottish Government guidance encourages restrictions during teaching and learning and asks schools to consider whole-school approaches.

Research into school phone restrictions has also reported some encouraging outcomes. Studies highlighted in Clyde's research review include:

  • Improved attainment: An English study found a 2.21 percentage-point increase in pupils achieving five good GCSE passes following phone restrictions.
  • Reduced bullying: Studies across two Spanish regions reported reductions in teenage bullying of between 9.5% and 18% after restrictions were introduced.
  • Improved learning outcomes: Research in Norway found girls exposed to smartphone restrictions achieved externally marked maths scores 0.22 standard deviations higher.
  • Greater teacher support: In one lockable pouch rollout study, teacher satisfaction with their school's phone policy increased from 26% to 75%.

The research isn't identical across every school or country, and restrictions alone don't guarantee improvements in attainment or wellbeing. What the evidence does show most consistently is that effective restrictions can significantly reduce phone use during the school day – removing opportunities for digital distraction and allowing schools to create a more focused learning environment.

A new product, from a trusted education supplier

The product might be new to Clyde, but supplying schools isn't.

Clyde Paper & Print has supplied schools, print buyers and public-sector organisations across the UK since 1977. We are a supplier on the Scotland Excel education materials framework and hold FSC, PEFC, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications.

That experience means we're offering more than simply a box of pouches. Schools can also access rollout support including parent and pupil communication templates, a model mobile phone policy, staff briefing materials and phased implementation guidance, alongside a named account contact.
